On July 29, 2022, my family and I welcomed two wonderful dogs into our lives from a shelter in Champaign County, Ohio. We named them Willow and Juniper. As rescues from a puppy mill, it took them some time to adjust to their new home. My siblings and I quickly grew close to them, finding immense joy in their company and playfulness.
Fast forward to July 29, 2024, a date that will forever haunt us. Our dogs, Juniper, Willow, and our other dog Molly, managed to escape from our yard. Living on a busy main road, this was a terrifying situation. Molly and Willow darted across the street to a nearby parking lot, with cars thankfully slowing down to avoid them. However, the unthinkable happened when Juniper attempted to cross the road.
A family member was just about to reach Juniper when a speeding driver, with at least 20 feet to stop, chose not to. This reckless individual struck Juniper, despite seeing my family member and the fact that all other cars had slowed down. The sight was witnessed by my poor brother, and it devastated my sister, who adored Juniper. My mother felt an overwhelming sense of guilt, and the family member who witnessed the incident was left heartbroken and helpless.
The emotional toll on our remaining dogs, Willow and Molly, was evident as they cried and barked incessantly, understanding the gravity of what had occurred. As for me, the actions of the driver disgusted me. To the person driving that black Dodge, speeding without a care: I hope you carry the weight of your actions and the guilt of what you’ve done. May the memory of Juniper haunt you, and may the blood of my beloved dog be a constant reminder of your negligence.
I share this story with a plea: please do not speed. What may seem like a minor action to you can have devastating consequences for others. Juniper was not just a dog; she was a cherished member of our family, and her loss has left a void that can never be filled.
